Ben Vautier — the French artist who signs simply Ben, and whose handwritten text paintings are known far beyond the art world — made this bottle in 1999 for Absolut Originals, an eighteen-month programme in which sixteen European artists answered the bottle in painting, sculpture, photography and architecture. It was never sold: 150 numbered copies, etched with acid so that the blackened glass is eaten away around texts and drawings left standing in relief.
