Jon Coffelt, then a 28-year-old Birmingham painter and the youngest artist Absolut had commissioned, opened the series with a riot of Southern symbols: white blossoms in the foreground, a striped red heart, a banded serpent curling across a lilac ground and a blue spiral, with the bottle's printed label replaced by his own scribbled hand. The painting ran as a full page in USA Today on 17 January 1992, the first of the 51, and Absolut later added more of his work to its collection.
