Alaska
Alex D. Combs, the Halibut Cove painter once called the grand old man of Alaskan modernism, set his Alaska on the Iditarod trail: a musher in a fur-trimmed parka rides his sled beside a towering bottle while the dog team surges across the foreground, and a weathered sign points the way to Nome, where the race ends. Thick, scraped brushwork, snow and a line of blue mountains make the bottle part of the landscape rather than an object placed in it.
