Mark McDowell, a Scottsdale painter of bright still lifes laced with social commentary, floats the bottle and a tilted martini glass in a cartoon-blue sky of pink cumulus above red desert buttes that recall Monument Valley. The joke sits in the corner: the olive is skewered not on a cocktail pick but on a tiny saguaro.
