California
Charles Becker, a Northern California master of trompe l'oeil, gives the state a still life rather than a landscape: by a lace-curtained window, a silver pitcher, a red vase with a bare berry branch, stacked leather-bound books, a seashell and a spill of apples, plums, grapes and strawberries surround a bottle of Absolut Citron with a curl of lemon peel. The painting belongs to the five-picture series for Absolut that, by his own account, launched his career.
