Absolut Blank

Absolut Blank was the 2011 programme in which Absolut handed the outline of its bottle to artists as a blank canvas. Close to twenty illustrators, painters and designers took part across films, print, outdoor work and events, each asked to fill the same empty silhouette with their own idea of creativity. A run of numbered Blank bottles came out of it, opened by the Cologne collagist Mario Wagner, each giving one artist the whole surface of the glass. Local launches added smaller pieces of their own, from gift bottles to tins, so the series also traces where the campaign travelled.

  1. Blank #2 2013 · 2 variants The second Blank release, signed by Dave Kinsey, the street artist and designer whose mural work turns on the traffic between the emotional and the environmental. Bright colour detonates against darker washes to give a flower carrying the energy of a city rather than of a garden. It went out across Italy, Germany, Greece, Austria, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland.
  2. Blank #3 2013 · 1 variant Pilpeled's Blank bottle is a night walk down the ficus-lined boulevards of Tel Aviv — Nordau, Rothschild, Chen — and a nod to the nightlife that gave the city its international reputation. “To understand Tel Aviv, one must walk its streets,” he said of it. 150,000 copies, for the Israeli market.
  3. Blank Tin 2013 · 1 variant Limited edition metal case, part of the blank campaign in Peru.
  4. Blank #1 2012 · 1 variant The bottle that opened Absolut Blank, the programme through which Absolut set itself up as a blank canvas for a new generation of artists. Mario Wagner, the Cologne illustrator known for his collages, signed the first one, working from the visual language of the 1960s and the era's fixation on the space race and the Moon. 410,000 copies, sold across Italy, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Malaysia and Slovakia.
  5. Blank 2011 · 1 variant A ceramic 200 ml bottle handed out as a gift at the Absolut Blank launch in Mexico.
