Art bottles

This collection gathers Absolut art bottles: one-off or small-run bottles painted, customised or built by artists outside the regular editions. The projects are mostly local, born of contests, auctions, anniversaries and launch parties rather than of a global campaign, from a British illustration contest to bottles customised for a Stonewall auction at London Pride. What links them is the bottle used as a blank surface, a shape familiar enough that each artist, from street illustrators to painters like Romero Britto, can make it their own, often in a handful of copies or a single one.

  1. 2021

Esra Gülmen 1 variant A bottle painted by hand by the German artist Esra Gülmen, made with Pernod Ricard Germany in support of SOS Méditerranée.
  2. 2020

Alexander Prince 1 variant An art bottle made for the Absolut Create UK contest by Alexander Prince, an illustrator from Leeds. His conceptual work — for products, editorials and advertising alike — leans on saturated colour, strong form and character to draw a line between society and nature.
Andrew Hudson 1 variant An art bottle made for the Absolut Create UK contest by the London artist Andrew Hudson, whose bold, high-colour work takes what is around him as material — shop signage, song lyrics, a conversation caught in passing.
Anna Borup 1 variant An art bottle made for the Absolut Create UK contest by Anna Borup, a London illustrator whose portraits run on a bold palette and are frequently cut through with abstract lines and shapes.
Ash Bishop 1 variant An art bottle made for the Absolut Create UK contest by Ash Bishop, a sign painter known for glass signage across Britain and beyond, usually finished in traditional gold leaf. Here he works from 1930s European advertising and café fascia lettering, on a palette borrowed from the Espresso Martini.
Carolin Dowsett 1 variant The bottle that won the Absolut Create UK contest. Carolin Dowsett, a freelance artist and illustrator in Manchester, works from movement, words, sounds and feeling — bold fluid shapes with text used playfully to carry a conversation. Here the bright colour stands in for the jolt of an Espresso Martini.
  3. 2017

Colors of Ostrava 1 variant Five bottles, marbled by hand by the Czech artist Edita Gollová for the 2017 edition of the Colors of Ostrava festival. No two are the same.
Matej Mazák 1 variant Art bottles made for Absolut Slovak Art by Matej Mazák, an animator and illustrator working in Slovakia.
Tomáš Bánik 1 variant Bottles painted by hand in black and white by Tomáš Bánik, a creative director and graphic designer working in Slovakia, on the split between day and night. Made for Absolut Slovak Art.
Zuzana Badinková 1 variant Art bottles for Absolut Slovak Art by Zuzana Badinková, a Czech artist whose imagined portraits are pulled towards the natural and the animal.
  4. 2016

David Leitner 25 variants Twenty-five bottles, each one different and each signed, painted by the Vienna-based painter and illustrator David Leitner. Some were placed at random in Billa stores, with the locations announced on social media; the rest went to auction.
Ed Marler 1 variant One of twelve one-off bottles auctioned for London Pride 2016, with every penny going to Stonewall, Britain's leading LGBT equality charity. The British womenswear designer Ed Marler wrapped the Mix bottle in fishnet and finished it with gems and a crown.
Fred Butler 1 variant One of twelve one-off bottles auctioned for London Pride 2016 in aid of Stonewall, with all proceeds going to the charity. The London accessories designer Fred Butler read the brief as carnival and built it from her signature folded foil ruffles, over sequins and rhinestones, in every colour of the spectrum so the whole rainbow is present.
Gareth Pugh 1 variant One of twelve one-off bottles auctioned for London Pride 2016 in aid of Stonewall. Gareth Pugh hand-painted a red and white candy-stripe starburst taken from the spirit of Soho — elaborate and faintly surreal, which is where his label lives.
Henry Holland 1 variant One of twelve one-off bottles auctioned for London Pride 2016, with all proceeds to Stonewall. This one is by the London fashion designer Henry Holland.
James Davison 1 variant One of twelve one-off bottles auctioned for London Pride 2016 in aid of Stonewall. The London illustrator James Davison went bright and deliberately tongue-in-cheek, working Polari — the coded slang of British queer life — into the design.
Munroe Bergdorf 1 variant One of twelve one-off bottles auctioned for London Pride 2016 in aid of Stonewall, this one by Munroe Bergdorf — DJ, model, and one of the most visible advocates for trans people in Britain.
Piers Atkinson 1 variant One of twelve one-off bottles auctioned for London Pride 2016 in aid of Stonewall. The English milliner Piers Atkinson shrank his signature cherries down to a red glitter micro-version and laid a veil of rainbow Swarovski crystals over the printed design.
Princess Julia 1 variant One of twelve one-off bottles auctioned for London Pride 2016 in aid of Stonewall, by the DJ and writer Princess Julia.
Sibling 1 variant One of twelve one-off bottles auctioned for London Pride 2016 in aid of Stonewall, by Sibling — the knitwear label Sid Bryan and Cozette McCreery built into a fixture of the London shows.
Sink the Pink 1 variant One of twelve one-off bottles auctioned for London Pride 2016 in aid of Stonewall. Sink the Pink, the East London collective, work on the principle that more is more, and buried this one under rainbow pom-poms.
The Most Beautiful Man in the World 1 variant One of twelve one-off bottles auctioned for London Pride 2016 in aid of Stonewall, by The Most Beautiful Man in the World — the magazine the stylist Frank Strachan directs, built from fashion and photography of emerging male models found around the world.
  5. 2015

Antonyo Marest 1 variant Antonyo Marest is a Spanish multidisciplinary artist working internationally. He was among the six names chosen by PAC — Plataforma de Arte Contemporáneo — for the #Fotocopiart by Absolut project shown at Estampa 2015 in Madrid, and went on in 2016 to develop his own series of works on the Absolut bottle across several materials.

  10. 1995

Romero Britto 1 variant Bottles painted by hand by Romero Britto in his pop register, in a range of sizes and colourways — the artist's own work on the glass rather than a printed edition.
